Fabiola Porras
Visual/Media

I am Mexican, born in Mexico City. Since childhood, I've had an innate artistic inclination. On one hand, I studied classical ballet, which gave me access to music and dance, and on the other, it was my introduction to painting, starting when I was three years old. My mother was a head nurse and nursing instructor, so I had many medical books at my fingertips, and I especially loved the anatomy books with their amazing illustrations. I loved flipping through them, drawing and coloring them, and even signing them. The best part of all this is that people supported me instead of scolding me. This sparked a love of books in me, and during my academic years, I became fascinated by mythology and archaeology. In high school, I was very interested in the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci, with his knowledge of anatomy, drawing, painting, sculpture, machines—design in general. This motivated me to study and complete a degree in industrial design at the Universidad Iberoamericana. This allowed me to create designs based on Mexican archaeology, which led me to found the company Bacabjuguetes, with my own designs of toys and characters based on Mayan culture. Since 2019, I have decided to dedicate myself full-time to my passion, which is painting. Through painting, I express what I have in mind to share; it's a dialogue with something that is special, interesting, or beautiful to me. My work may include mythological, archaeological, historical, and/or cultural motifs that have been very important to me throughout my life. In other words, it's not just about creating a combination of colors and textures on a canvas, but also about contributing something more than just aesthetics.
